Profiles (vertical alignment)

The road's elevation along its centreline — straight design grades joined by parabolic vertical curves, drawn over the existing ground.

The Profile tab

Select an alignment and open the Profile tab. Station runs along the horizontal axis, elevation up the vertical axis. It shows:

VPIs and vertical curves

A vertical alignment is a list of VPIs (Vertical Points of Intersection) — each a station, an elevation and a curve length. Straight grades run between VPIs; at each interior VPI a symmetric parabolic curve of the given length smooths the grade break: half its length before the VPI (the VPC), half after (the VPT). A curve length of 0 is a sharp grade break.

VPC = L/2 before the VPI  ·  VPT = L/2 after  ·  A = (gout − gin) × 100%  ·  K = L / |A|
A > 0 = crest (summit), A < 0 = sag (valley). K = curve length per 1% grade change — bigger K, gentler curve. Elevation/grade equations: Formula reference.

The Profile Builder dock

One row per VPI. Columns:

Every edit is undoable and immediately re-elevates the corridor in 3D.

Design checks

Crest and sag curves are checked against the minimum K for the active standard and speed; a grade break with no curve is also flagged. Issues appear in the Design Issues dock.

Tip If a sag or crest is flagged, increase its Curve L until K reaches the required value — the K column updates live as you type.
